Our Exclusive Interview with the Kickstarter Team

Our Exclusive Interview with the Kickstarter Team

FundingInsider Team January 14th 2025 3 mins, 495 words

The Funding Insider Team had the pleasure of meeting with the Kickstarter Design and Technology team at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Kickstarter is the world’s largest crowdfunding platform, and the Design and Technology category is the largest category on the site. This category consistently brings in innovative products from inventors and product creators all over the world.

In our interview with Nathan from the Design and Technology team, we were able to gleam meaningful insights on the benefits of the Kickstarter platform, tips for success on Kickstarter, and a special message for the Korea crowdfunding community.

Why Launch on Kickstarter

“So, just launching on Kickstarter, you get access to our community. Whenever you are attracting an audience, whether you brought that audience to the platform and did some of that prelaunch marketing or if you just launched and a lot of people are backing and you have a lot of traffic, you get raised in our search and discovery rankings, and then get surfaced to other backers that have like backgrounds, that have backed similar projects in the past. So, that kind of automated search and discovery will drive a lot of organic conversion for a creator that’s just launching. We also have editorial features which include things like newsletters, social media posts, other features… homepage features, category features, mobile app features. Those are the many ways that we are able to show your project to our backer community.”

Tips for Success on Kickstarter

I think, the start of success for any project is to tell a good story. So be really clear about what your product is, why it’s different, why you designed it, how it works… all of these things that are maybe obvious, but really being clear about communicating that value up front. Also being personal and letting them know … this is the team behind the project and showing your face, your team, or your partners … all the people that are helping to guarantee that this will be successful.

I also think, just, with storytelling, making sure that your copy is speaking to audiences globally, and making sure that it’s tuned to audiences, especially with Western and English-speaking audiences, which is important. I think all the best projects tell a story in a very clear way, they have a unique design, they are good at creating content that shows off that design and all of the unique design decisions that were made. And I think that can happen through photography, your video, renders, GIFs — all of these things that bring your project to life.
