Insider Success: Roller Pro
Welcome back to our Insider Success series, where we take a close look at successful Kickstarter campaigns as we identify helpful crowdfunding tactics that can propel us on the way to success.
Today, we’ll be taking a look at Roller Pro: Carry-On Luggage by Peak Design. This recent campaign launched in March 2025 and successfully funded over 13 million dollars from over 23,000 backers.
So, what did Peak Design do right? We’ve identified key 3 strategies that got this campaign well into the million dollar range.
The Power of Consecutive Launches
A proven record of successful Kickstarter campaigns can have a snowball effect for multiple reasons. This is mainly because backers will see your previous successes and know that you can be trusted. Kickstarter projects can be notoriously sketchy, so any way you can prove your trust to potential backers will pay back dividends with future projects.
Essentially, the Kickstarter ecosystem encourages and highly rewards repeat campaigns and purchases. The reason for this is the various newsletters and partner agencies who stay in contact with backers via email. Plus, as a Kickstarter creator, you can release an update for a past project that backers from previous campaigns will see in their email. All of these factors combine for powerful potential to build your brand on Kickstarter.
Well Designed Product
While we’re on the subject of Peak Design’s previous success, it’s worth talking about exactly who Peak Design is. This San Francisco based design studio reimagines products of all kinds, including phone cases, backpacks, tripods, and more. Each product they reinvent features not only high quality materials, but also unique and highly practical features for a variety of use cases.
It should come as no surprise that Peak Design’s most recent invention, the Roller Pro, is similarly well made and just as innovative as their previous projects. Roller Pro features maximized storage space for all of your luggage without any space going to waste due to the handles or other such elements. And the page goes out of its way to describe the carbon fiber material and all this material does for the suitcase. There are even dedicated camera lens compartments and slots for passports, travel tags, etc., for backers to purchase as an addon.
In short, a lot of care and attention went into making an excellent suitcase that solves the problems of its competitors. It’s clear that Peak Design’s reputation as a top-tier designer is well on display with Roller Pro.
High Quality Video
As someone who works more with the written word as opposed to video, I’ll admit that I generally do not watch Kickstarter project videos. But once I watched the video for Roller Pro, this project’s success made a lot more sense to me.
A lot of Roller Pro’s innovations are difficult to understand through text alone. The way the suitcase opens, the unique blends of materials, how light the suitcase is to carry around… all of these things are best seen and heard through a video, rather than read via text.
We recommend giving the video a close watch when you have the time. It’s more than just a narration on top of product footage; this video is an excellent example for any creator trying create an enticing project video.
And there you have it. Those are the three strategies we found in Peak Design’s campaign for Roller Pro.
